Since Proof of Heaven came out, Dr. Eben Alexander met and heard from literally thousands of individuals whom his story has affected. He also studied what the world’s religious traditions, and its philosophers, have had to say about the soul’s survival of death, and been deeply surprised at how often those voices from the past synch up with what he heard from people today.
Some of the people who have contacted him have argued that what he said happened to him is impossible – that as a physician and a scientist he had no business telling such a patently unbelievable story. But others – the great majority – have agreed with the philosophers and mystics of times past who believed in and experienced the reality of the soul’s survival. Because of what these people (both the ancient voices and the individuals he has heard from today) have told him, Dr. Alexander has come to realize that his story’s greatest single good is the permission it gives people today to believe what so many people in past times knew: there is more to life, and to the universe, than this single earthly life.
In this book he shares some of the stories that the people have told him, either in person or through his website, and links them up with what the world’s spiritual traditions have had to say in times past about the journey of the soul. A journey that, he is convinced, is much, much larger than the single, individual life each of us is living now. These stories suggest, just as his own NDE did, that while we never stop being spiritual beings, the degree to which we take on individual, specific bodies differs depending on what level of the universe’s spiritual/cosmic geography we are on. For life after life, we travel down through ever-denser realms and then back up into the freer, less physical worlds, each time becoming more experienced, more mature beings within a spiritual-physical universe that is growing and changing right along with us.
The scenario presented here isn’t, strictly speaking, new. That is precisely its power. It is as old as the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Odyssey of Homer, and Dante’s Divine Comedy. But the discovery of the profound agreement between contemporary personal stories, current scientific discoveries, and the truths of faith and literature is new.
